What’s Happening?

Today, Verizon users across the U.S. are reporting significant issues with their service. Many people are finding their phones stuck in SOS mode, which means they can’t make calls or send texts. This has understandably caused a lot of frustration.

The Details

Reports of the outage started flooding in around 9:30 a.m. ET, according to DownDetector.com, a site that tracks tech problems. Initially, Verizon didn’t acknowledge the outage on their social media, and their network status website was also down.

Later in the morning, a Verizon spokesperson confirmed there was “an issue impacting service for some customers” and assured users that their engineers are working to fix it.

User Experience

Throughout the morning, many customers struggled to connect with others. However, by noon, it seemed that the number of complaints was beginning to decline, suggesting that some users were regaining service. For those still having issues, the good news is that you can still use Wi-Fi calling if you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.

What Is SOS Mode?

If you’re wondering what SOS mode is, it’s a feature that allows users, starting with the iPhone 14, to send emergency messages via satellite when cellular service is out. This can be a lifesaver during network outages. Once cellular service is restored, SOS mode automatically turns off. Google is also planning to introduce a similar feature with their upcoming Pixel 9.

How to Stay Connected

If you’re dealing with Verizon service issues, here are some tips to stay in touch:

  • Use Wi-Fi Calling: If you’re on a Wi-Fi network, you can still make calls and send texts.
  • iMessage for Apple Users: iPhone users can continue messaging other Apple devices using iMessage, but you may run into issues texting Android users.
  • Enabling Wi-Fi Calling: Make sure your phone is set up for Wi-Fi calling:For iPhone:
    1. Go to Settings and tap on Phone.
    2. Turn on “Wi-Fi Calling.”
    For Android:
    1. Open the Phone app and go to Settings.
    2. Enable “Wi-Fi Calling.”

Both iPhone and Android phones are capable of placing wi-fi calls, using a wi-fi connection rather than a cellular network connection, but some devices and phone plans limit such use.

Final Thoughts

This situation is still unfolding, so keep an eye out for updates from Verizon. If you can’t reach someone because of this outage, consider using alternative communication methods until everything is back to normal.
