The massively popular children’s gaming platform, Roblox, has announced its upcoming launch on Sony’s PlayStation consoles. Roblox boasts over 60 million daily players, but it has faced criticism regarding content moderation. This expansion to PlayStation, along with other announcements, including character creation tools and a communication feature called Roblox Connect, underscores Roblox’s position as a global gaming powerhouse.
Starting in October 2023, Roblox will be available on both PlayStation 4 and PS5. Previously, the platform was accessible on computers, mobile devices, and Microsoft’s Xbox One console. This move to PlayStation is significant for Roblox as it further solidifies its standing as one of the world’s most popular gaming platforms.

Roblox’s widespread appeal, while challenging to pinpoint with absolute precision, is unquestionably remarkable. This phenomenon is particularly evident when considering the platform’s immense popularity among young gamers. In a significant revelation made by the company in 2020, it was disclosed that an impressive two-thirds of all children in the United States aged nine to twelve actively engaged with the Roblox universe.
Furthermore, a comprehensive survey conducted by Statista among a vast cohort of 400,000 UK children during the same year underscored Roblox’s supremacy in the gaming landscape. Astonishingly, a staggering 67% of these young respondents reported their active involvement in Roblox, solidifying its position as the undisputed leader in their gaming preferences. In striking contrast, the iconic Minecraft, widely recognized as one of the best-selling video games of all time, trailed behind with only 23% of children acknowledging their engagement with it.
These statistics vividly illustrate Roblox’s profound impact on the gaming habits and preferences of young players, cementing its status as a dominant force in the gaming industry.
Roblox’s appeal stems from its emphasis on user-generated content and creation. Rather than a traditional game, it allows players to develop their games within the platform, often referred to as “developers.” These developers, including many children, can create games and potentially earn in-game currency called Robux. Roblox is celebrated for nurturing young game designers and encouraging creativity, but this freedom and popularity have brought it under scrutiny.
In 2022, the NSPCC and Childline reported a five-fold increase in the number of children contacting them with concerns about Roblox since the start of the pandemic.
The launch of Roblox on PlayStation was unveiled at the annual Developers Conference, where Roblox also highlighted the success of the open beta version on Meta Quest earlier in the year. The beta, available to users with Quest 2 or Quest Pro headsets, garnered over one million downloads in its first five days and is set for a full launch on Quest later this month.
While specific details about the PlayStation launch are limited, Roblox stated that players on both previous and current-generation PlayStation consoles would have access to the full catalog of Roblox experiences.
Additionally, Roblox introduced “Connect,” a feature allowing players to make in-game calls using their real names, body language, and facial expressions. By using a camera to capture their face, players can project their real-world expressions onto their in-game character. This motion-capture technology was first introduced in August and is available to players aged 13 and above. Players must provide consent for Roblox to use their camera, and the company emphasized that video from the camera never leaves the device.
Details regarding the countries where Roblox Connect will be available remain undisclosed, with the company promising further announcements in the future.
